Termite Control in Santa Rosa — Dual Threat Zone

Santa Rosa sits in one of California's few regions where both drywood and subterranean termites cause significant structural damage. Our older Victorian neighborhoods, redwood-framed homes, and clay-rich soils create conditions where both species thrive—often simultaneously in the same structure.

Two Termite Species, Two Different Threats

Drywood Termites

Live entirely within wood—no soil contact needed. They enter through exposed wood surfaces and slowly consume structural timbers, furniture, and trim from the inside out. Common in attic framing, door/window headers, and hardwood floors of older Santa Rosa homes.

  • Tiny fecal pellets (frass) that look like fine sand or coffee grounds
  • Small kick-out holes in wood surfaces where pellets are expelled
  • Piles of pellets accumulating on windowsills or below infested wood
  • Swarmers (winged termites) emerging indoors during warm evenings, typically September–November

Subterranean Termites

Colony lives in soil and builds mud tubes to reach wood. Far more destructive than drywood—a mature colony consumes wood at 10x the rate. Sonoma County's clay soils retain moisture that sustains large subterranean colonies near foundations.

  • Mud shelter tubes on foundation walls, piers, or plumbing penetrations
  • Soft, hollow-sounding wood at ground-level contact points
  • Buckling or blistering paint over infested baseboards or door frames
  • Swarmers emerging from soil near foundations in spring, often after rain

Our Termite Treatment Process

1

Full-Structure Inspection (WDI Report)

We inspect the entire structure—attic, subarea, interior, exterior—documenting all termite evidence, moisture damage, and conducive conditions. For real estate transactions, we produce a California Wood Destroying Insect (WDI) report with findings categorized as Section 1 (active infestation) and Section 2 (conditions conducive to infestation).

2

Species-Specific Treatment

Drywood: Localized treatment with injectable products for isolated infestations. Whole-structure fumigation (tenting) when infestation is widespread or inaccessible. Subterranean: Liquid termiticide barriers in soil around the foundation, combined with monitoring stations for ongoing detection.

3

Conducive Condition Correction

We identify and recommend fixes for conditions that invite termites: wood-to-soil contact, excessive moisture in crawlspaces, plumbing leaks, improper grading, and stored wood against structures. In post-fire rebuild areas, we pay special attention to new construction details that may have created termite entry points.

Protecting Santa Rosa's Historic Homes

The Railroad Square district, McDonald Avenue corridor, and Cherry Street neighborhoods contain some of Sonoma County's finest Victorian and early 20th-century homes. These older structures are disproportionately vulnerable to termite damage due to construction practices of their era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a home have both drywood and subterranean termites at the same time?

Yes, and it's more common in Sonoma County than many areas of California. We frequently find drywood termites in upper-story attic framing and subterranean termites at ground level in the same structure. Each requires separate treatment—fumigation addresses drywood but does nothing for subterranean colonies in the soil.

I found tiny pellets on my windowsill. What are they?

Those are almost certainly drywood termite fecal pellets (frass). They're about the size of coarse sand grains, hexagonal under magnification, and range from tan to dark brown. Termites push them out of small holes in the wood surface. The pellet pile indicates active termites directly above—don't disturb the area before inspection.

Is fumigation (tenting) the only option for drywood termites?

No. If the infestation is localized and accessible, we can treat with injectable foam or liquid products directly into the galleries. However, drywood termites often have hidden colonies in wall voids and inaccessible areas. If evidence appears in multiple locations, fumigation is the only method that reaches every colony throughout the structure.

Does my new post-fire rebuild need termite protection?

Absolutely. New construction in Coffey Park, Fountaingrove, and Mark West areas should include pre-treatment of soil beneath slabs and installation of termite monitoring stations. The building code requires certain protections, but additional preventive treatment during the construction phase is far more effective and economical than retrofitting later.

How often should I have a termite inspection?

For Santa Rosa homes, we recommend every 2–3 years for proactive homeowners, or annually for homes built before 1960 or those with previous termite history. Real estate transactions require a current WDI report. If you see swarmers or frass at any time, don't wait for a scheduled inspection—contact us immediately.
